Taxes in Newtown Borough will be increasing slightly to cover the cost of fire services.

On Tuesday evening, Newtown Borough Council approved a $2.5 million spending plan, a slight decrease in spending from the 2024 approved budget.

The budget includes a 2 mill tax increase for the fire fund, which will go toward the borough’s agreement to pay Newtown Township for fire services.

“We are raising taxes by 2 mills in support of our fire fund. They will go directly into the fire fund to help pay our agreement with Newtown Township,” Council President Emily Heinz said last month.

The average taxpayer in the borough will see an additional $80 to $100 on their tax bill in 2025 due to the millage increase, according to borough officials.

In October, council gathered and spent hours scrutinizing the budget details, officials said last month.

The 2025 spending plan will keep operations largely the same, with nine full-time employees. The borough will end 2024 with no outstanding debts since a loan for the 2017 conversion of the streetlights to LEDs was paid off several weeks ago.
