Observant 11-Year-Old Spots Smoke-Filled House

A dog is alive and a Newtown Township family was able to return to their home Sunday night thanks to observant neighbors and responsive firefighters.

An 11-year-old boy went to see if his friend was home at his Crittenden Drive residence when he noticed smoke and an alarm going off around 1 p.m. Sunday. The boy ran back home and alerted his father, who checked and called emergency responders, Newtown Fire Association Battalion Chief Zach Dunkelberger said.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and broke down a door to gain entry to the smoke-filled house, according to Dunkelberger.

The source of the smoke was found to be a pot of food that the homeowner left on by mistake, the battalion chief said.

No one was home at the time and firefighters rescued a dog.

“Fortunately, he was observant,” Dunkelberger said of the boy who spotted the smoke.

The incident did not cause any structural damage but left extensive odor damage.

The house was cleared for the residents to return.
