Democratic State Rep. Steve Santarsiero’s bid for congress was endorsed Tuesday morning by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf.
The backing from the Democratic governor comes weeks after Santarsiero gained the endorsement of the National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, United Steelworkers, Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale and more than a dozen labor unions.
“From standing up for women’s reproductive rights to holding the gas drillers accountable, Steve Santarsiero is the proven progressive champion we need in Congress,” Wolf said in a statement. “Steve isn’t afraid to stand up to the special interests or to do the right thing even when it’s tough. That’s the type of leadership we need in Congress. I’m proud to endorse Steve and I look forward to standing by his side and campaigning hard for his election.”
“I’m proud to have earned Governor Wolf’s support. I value his leadership, and I look forward to working together to win this election,” Santarsiero said in a statement. “In Congress, I will continue to stand with the governor to find responsible solutions for Bucks and Montgomery Counties.”
Santarsiero has also gained the endorsement of both the Bucks County and Montgomery County Democratic committees.
Santarsiero and Wolf has campaigned together in the past.
Santarsiero’s Democratic opponent Shaughnessy Naughton received support early on from former Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell, a powerful figure in Pennsylvania politics.
