Fireflies flickering. A circle of chairs around the campfire. Gazing up at the stars. One of the best ways to have these experiences (and for your kids to enjoy them also) is to stay the night outdoors.
It’s estimated that more than 40 million people go camping in the United States each year. Pennsylvanians are fortunate to have lots of options when it comes to locations for camping on lands managed by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Here are some places you can celebrate National Camping Month in June:
- In the state park system, 68 of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have overnight options.
- Those looking to really get away from it all can find primitive camping in Pennsylvania’s 2.2 million acres of state forest.
- If you prefer to explore Pennsylvania’s beauty with all the creature comforts, try the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle State Park.
Never been camping but like to give it a try? Nine different state parks offer a First Time Camper Program. This unique initiative allows first-time campers to stay two nights at a state park and borrow camping gear — all with gentle hands-on instruction from resident expert campers.
Of course, there are many opportunities to pitch a tent or park your camper at private campgrounds in the state as well. If all else fails, you can always give camping a try in your backyard.
There are lots of reasons to go camping. Unplug. Connect children to nature. Create memories. Have fun. But the best one may be an affordable room with a view.
