Big news came out of Wednesday’s Newtown Borough Council work session meeting – Steeple View developer Allan Smith announced the state-run Fine Wine and Good Spirits store would be moving into his development when it opens.

The agreement between Smith and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB), which runs all Fine Wine and Good Spirits store in Pennsylvania, has been in the works for a long time, Smith said.

When Smith initially proposed the Steeple View development on South State Street, he spoke of the PLCB’s desire to close the current store on Centre Avenue and relocate it to his new development. Smith also owns the current building the PLCB store is located inside.

The building the current PLCB store and Newtown Beer sits in is set to be torn down as part of phase two of Steeple View. The second phase still needs approvals but is planned to include more mixed-use buildings, a 500-car parking garage and public spaces, including a piazza.

Smith also told the council and public that fashion retailer Ann Taylor is planning to move into the new development. In addition, he announced upscale cosmetics store Bluemercury will be signing a lease for the complex.

Steeple View has already signed fashion retailer Banana Republic and women’s fashion and accessories store Francesca’s to the mixed-used development that will include 10 luxury condominiums.

Smith said he is currently working with Banana Republic to change where their store will be located in the under-construction complex.

Crews are continuing work on the steel skeleton along South State Street and are beginning to put walls up.

“As you can see construction is doing fairly well,” Smith said.
