Newtown Borough’s newest full-time police officer was sworn in Thursday.

George Rusinko, a resident of Plumstead, has been hired to fill a full-time police officer position in the borough’s department. He has worked with the Warrington Police Department as an administrative assistant and an auxiliary police officer in addition to working in Newtown as a part-time patrolman.

Mayor Charles  ‘Corky’ Swartz said Rusinko is graduate of Bucks County Community College and Temple University’s criminal justice program. The officer received his Act 120 police certification from the Montgomery County Police Academy in winter 2010.

Newtown first hired Rusinko as a part-time police officer in February 2010.

“I think the results speak for themselves,” Council President Robert Walker said of the hiring.

Swartz said Rusinko’s hiring was made through the civil service process and also gives the department an active list of qualified candidates in the future if vacancies in the department open up.
