The president of Poland stopped in Bucks County as part of his visit to the United States.
President Andrzej Duda made a visit to the Catholic Mass and the dedication of a memorial at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in New Britain Township Sunday.
After a 12:30 p.m. mass, Duda and his wife, Agata Kornhauser-Duda, took time to reflect and laid flowers at the monument that marks the sacrifice and loss of life by those who spoke out during Poland’s time under a Communist government, according to the Polish president’s office.
The Czestochowa shrine is a large draw for people of Polish decent. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and President Ronald Reagan have visited to the shrine in the past. In addition, Karol Wojtyła visited the shrine before he became Pope John Paul II.
The event was attended by thousands of people and featured security fit for a visiting head of state. Police from around the county assisted federal and New Britain law enforcement.
Duda’s trip to the United States included a visit to a memorial in Jersey City Sunday evening and attendance this week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
