It may not be the most surprising development in the race for the Eighth Congressional District, but it certainly is high profile.
State Rep. Steve Santarsiero, the Democrat running for congress, won the endorsement of President Barack Obama on Monday.
The statement from Obama was provided to NewtownPANow.com:
“I’m proud to endorse Steve Santarsiero for the United States House of Representatives. Over the last eight years, we’ve made tremendous strides towards making our nation safer, stronger, and fairer, but it’s clear that to continue this progress, we need to send more commonsense leaders like Steve Santarsiero to Congress to get things done for the middle class. Steve Santarsiero is a champion for Pennsylvania’s families and isn’t afraid to take on the tough fights, like defending a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions, protecting Social Security and Medicare, making sure we keep our sacred promises to our nation’s veterans and their families, and addressing the crushing burden of student loan debt felt by so many of Pennsylvania’s students and families. Steve Santarsiero is the kind of tough and smart leader who will build on all we’ve accomplished and take our nation forward, and that’s why I know the people of Pennsylvania can count on him.”
Santarsiero, a Lower Makefield resident who formerly worked as an attorney and teacher, said he was “honored and humbled to receive Barack Obama’s support for my campaign for congress.”
“Thanks to his leadership over these past eight years, our country emerged from an economic crisis more severe than any since the Great Depression. In Congress, I will be committed to continuing the progress Barack Obama has forged, fighting every day for a brighter future for our families and for generations to come,” Santarsiero said.
