The race for the 31st Legislative District was too close to call as of early Wednesday morning.

The election between Newtown Borough Council member Perry Warren, a Democrat, and Newtown Township Supervisor Ryan Gallagher, a Republican, was less than 30 votes apart, according to unofficial county election numbers. Warren was reported to have 18,982 votes and Gallagher had 18,954.

The two candidates, both lawyers, are battling to take the state representative seat currently held by Democrat Steve Santarsiero.

David Marshall, Warren’s campaign manager, was hesitant to declare victory but noted that county poll numbers did show them ahead by 21 to 28 votes.

The 31st Legislative District covers all of Lower Makefield, Newtown Borough, Newtown Township, Yardley Borough and a portion of Morrisville Borough.
