Newtown was packed with people who came out to celebrate the holiday season Friday evening.

Hundreds gathered in the parking lot of the Newtown Fire Association in Newtown Borough to welcome Santa as he lit up the town’s Christmas tree.

Following the lighting, cookies and hot chocolate were served in the firehouse as Santa met with kids in his own hut next to the tree. Friday kicked off Christmas time in Newtown, with many of the local businesses participating in the Newtown Mercantile Group’s Midnight Madness, where the shops stayed open until midnight to usher in the holiday shopping season.

Of the businesses staying open and offering deals was Alternate Dimension Toys.

“I think having special events and drawing in customers is always important,” said Andy Waskie, one of the owners of the shop.

On Sunday, the Newtown Business Association‘s McCaffrey’s Food Markets Newtown Holiday Parade will kick off at 2 p.m.
