Under cloudy skies and chilly temperatures Sunday afternoon, dozens of Revolutionary War reenactors boarded three replica Durham boats and crossed the Delaware River at McKonkey’s Ferry, now known as Washington Crossing Historic Park.

Thousands of people lined the banks of the Delaware River in the Upper Makefield portion of the park to watch the reenactors practice for their annual Christmas Day tradition to mark the famous 1776 crossing that turned the war in the favor of the Americans.

John Godzieba, a Bristol Township police lieutenant portrayed George Washington, led the reenactors as they traced the steps the country’s forefathers did on a cold Christmas hundreds of years ago.

Visitors on the park Sunday were able to watch the enactment, tour the historic buildings on the property and take part in several demonstrations.

The rehearsal crossing is a practice run for the world-famous Christmas morning trek that will kick off at noon on Christmas Day. The event is free and reenactors will take to the water at 1 p.m.
