Newtown Borough Council voted to keep the tax rate the same for 2017.

The Council voted unanimously last week to approve a $3.9 million spending plan that will fund borough services through the upcoming year.

The millage rate will remain at 13.25 mills and the tax will remain at $540 for the average assessed value. In addition, borough residents will be taxed a 1 percent earned income tax that is split with the Council Rock School District.

The police department is the largest expense the borough has at $573,000 with public works coming at roughly $336,000.

The Council also voted to continue to retain Mario Canales as engineer, William Bolla as solicitor and Lehigh Valley-based Barry Isett and Associates to handle zoning and building inspections.
