Soldiers Reenact Washington’s Crossing

National Guard members reenacted Gen. George Washington’s Christmas crossing of the Delaware River Wednesday morning.

The crossing between Washington Crossing Historic Park and Titusville, New Jersey, was part of the Region 1 Best Warrior Competition. The troops used a rubber raiding craft to traverse the swollen river.

Once on the New Jersey side of the river, 14 Army National Guard Soldiers and noncommissioned officers from the six New England states, New Jersey and New York took part in the 12-mile trek to Trenton, where Washington’s solider fought the Hessians 240 years ago.

This week, the group competed in various times events, including urban warfare simulations, the march to Trenton, land navigation, and the Army Physical Fitness Test. As part of the competition, the two winner will move on to compete in the 2017 Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition to be named the Army Guard’s best-of-the-best and earn the title of the Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year.

The event was scheduled to involve Black Hawk helicopter landing in Upper Makefield but that portion of the event was cancelled.
