The Bucks County Mosquito Control Program will be using trucks and ATVs Thursday to spray Tyler State Park to control the mosquito population.
County officials said the ultra-low volume spray will take place in the area of the main playground in Newtown Township. Several nearby trails and surrounding areas may also be treated.
“The equipment dispenses Duet Dual-Action Adulticide at a rate of 0.75 ounces per acre. The product is designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. The application material has a very low toxicity profile to mammals and will have negligible impact on non-target insects and the environment,” county officials said.
The spraying operation is weather contingent and a back-up day has been set for Friday.
According to a multi-agency state task force that deal with mosquito control, the first and only West Nile Virus positive sample was collected last week in Newtown Township.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported one in five people with West Nile Virus will show symptoms, with less than 1 percent developing the most serious illness.
Officials say using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites can help reduce the chances of being bitten.
