Thousands are without power in the Newtown area after an powerful line of overnight storms.

According to PECO, there were 27 customers in the dark in Newtown Borough, 1,647 in Newtown Township, 1,121 in Upper Makefield, and 825 in Wrightstown as of 7 a.m. In Wrightstown, that meant that more than 50 percent of all PECO customers in the township did not have service.

“Due to the severe storms that occurred overnight, we are urging motorists to use caution during your commute. There are several locations where trees that have fallen and some that pulled down wires,” Newtown Township police said.

Upper Makefield police listed the following road closures as of 7 a.m.:

  • Pineville Road still closed between Buckmanville and 232
  • Highland Road is closed on the S-curve between Wrightstown Road and Scott Drive
  • Woodhill Road is closed between Creamery and Russell Court and most likely will be for quite some time due to multiple trees on wires
  • Northbound lane of River Road in the area of Stoneybrook Road is closed, but southbound lane is open

The storms had an impact on schools.

Due to the storms, Bucks County was planning to open county offices two hours late, but noted they might close. A final call was to be made at 8:30 a.m.

The line of rain and high winds rolled in late Thursday night after trick-or-treaters had finished their rounds.
