Newtown Borough Council Member Amy Lustig has announced her resignation, effective Thursday.

Lustig said at a recent meeting that a job change was behind her decision to depart the governing body.

At her final public meeting Tuesday evening, Lustig thanked the borough staff and fellow council members for their efforts, contributions, and support. She also thanked her family.

“I encourage everyone in Newtown Borough to get involved,” she said.

Lustig has represented the borough’s First Ward on council since January 2022.

During her time on council, Lustig served as the liaison from council to the Environmental Advisory Council, the Human Relations Commission, and the Walk Friendly Newtown Committee.

Council President Tara Grunde-McLaughlin presented Lustig with a plaque for her service.

“It is because of individuals such as you donating countless hours of your time and talent that Newtown Borough continues to be such a special place to live,” Grunde-McLaughlin said.

With Lustig resigning, the council will have 45 days to fill her seat.

Those interested in filling the vacancy must be registered voters living in the First Ward and have lived there continuously for at least one year prior to their appointment.

Resumes will be accepted through May 26 at 5 p.m. Applicants should submit their resumes to Borough Secretary Judy Musto at jmusto.newtown@gmail.com.

The process for formal acceptance and appointment by the Borough Council is as follows: On June 7, the council will vote to formally accept Lustig’s resignation and conduct interviews of applicants. On June 13, the council will vote to appoint a new member through the adoption of a resolution, who will then be sworn in.

The newly appointed council member will serve until December 31, 2023.

The remaining two years of Lustig’s term will be on the November 7, ballot for voters to decide.
