The owners of Guru’s Indian Cuisine have announced they will temporarily close the business’ doors in the new year to focus on a personal mission.

Ashni “Baba” Kumar and Priya Guru, the couple who have run the popular North Sycamore Street eatery, revealed their plans to pause business operations to adopt two young sisters from India.

The restaurant, known for its authentic Indian dishes, will cease operations at the end of Sunday, January 7, as reported by Newtown Patch.

“This is a bittersweet announcement, but we plan to be back – bigger and better than ever – during the spring of 2024,” Priya told the news organization. “We cannot wait to re-launch and continue to serve the Newtown community as soon as possible.”

To mark their temporary departure and celebrate the community’s support, Guru’s Indian Cuisine will host a public going away celebration on Thursday, January 4, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is priced at $20 per person. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Guru’s Guardian Angels, a nonprofit organization founded earlier this year by the couple, according to the Daily Voice.

Guru’s Indian Cuisine has been a fixture in Newtown Township since 2015, relocating to its current location on North Sycamore Street in 2019.
