Thousands gathered at Washington Crossing Historic Park in Upper Makefield Township on Sunday for the first of two reenactments of Gen. George Washington’s iconic 1776 Christmas crossing of the Delaware River.

Marking 247 years since the original crossing, which played a critical role in the Revolutionary War, enthusiasts and history buffs witnessed a rehearsal of the daring maneuver that helped shape the nation’s future.

The event drew a crowd on both sides of the river despite the foggy conditions.

The second reenactment is scheduled for Christmas Day, Monday, December 25. The event will run from noon to 3 p.m. and will feature the crossing reenactment at 1 p.m.
