The Centre Avenue Bridge walkway has been repaired by PennDOT crews.

The walkway over the Newtown Creek along Centre Avenue in Newtown Borough had been closed since earlier this month due to the rotting of boards.

By Wednesday morning, crews had completed the repair work to reopen the walkway, said Krys Johnson, a spokesperson for PennDOT.

“A more comprehensive repair will be needed as a future PennDOT project,” Johnson said.

The bridge was listed as being in “fair” condition by the state. Records state the span is “functionally obsolete.”

The bridge dates back to 1796 and has had upgrades over the years.
