With the 2024 election up the nation, state, and federal law enforcement officials have issued messages to the public.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry joined a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from across the country in releasing a statement to “condemn any and all acts of post-election violence, and to reaffirm the importance of a peaceful democratic process leading up to the 2024 general election.”
The state’s top law enforcement official has said that “democracy was built on the basic right to vote in peace, and that her office is collaborating with local, state, and federal partners to ensure a free and fair election process.”
Below is the the unified statement from the attorneys general:
“Regardless of the 2024 election outcome, we condemn any and all acts of violence related to its results. A peaceful transfer of power is the highest testament to the rule of law, a tradition that stands at the heart of our nation’s stability.
“As Attorneys General, we affirm our commitment to protect our communities and uphold the democratic principles we serve.
“We call upon every American to vote, participate in civil discourse, and, above all, respect the integrity of the democratic process. Let us come together after this election, not divided by outcomes, but united in our shared commitment to the rule of law and the safety of our fellow Americans.
“Violence has no place in our democratic process. We will enforce the law against any acts that threaten our communities and democracy.”
Threats related to elections and against politicians and election workers have increased in recent years.
The FBI Philadelphia Field Office said they are standing up election command posts with law enforcement partners.
“The FBI works closely with our federal, state, and local partners to identify and stop any potential threats to public safety. We gather and analyze intelligence to determine whether individuals might be motivated to take violent action for any reason, including due to concerns about the election. It is vital the FBI, our law enforcement partners, and the public work together to protect our communities as Americans exercise their right to vote. We encourage members of the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity to law enforcement,” said FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center issued alerts recently that foreign actors are expected to “spread disinformation in the lead up to, and likely in the days following, the 2024 U.S. general election” and have already spread baseless information about hacked voter data.
A recent viral video purporting to show ballots in Bucks County being ripped up was false and found to be spread by foreign actors.
