The Centre Street Bridge in Newtown Borough is closed for an repair and restoration project that will continue until November 27, officials announced.
The bridge, a historical structure dating back to 1796 and spanning Newtown Creek, was closed to traffic on Wednesday following damage sustained in August.
A vehicle crash had compromised the south wall of the bridge, leading to damage along the pedestrian walkway.
According to officials, the repair work involves stone-by-stone restoration by a PennDOT contractor.
While the bridge is closed, drivers are advised to use alternative routes including State Street, Washington Avenue, and Sycamore Street.
Local access will be maintained, and drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to allot extra travel time when passing through the vicinity, PennDOT officials said.
The project’s next phase, which is scheduled for December, will focus on replacing the pedestrian walkway.
Newtown Borough Manager Craig Totaro stated last month that the repairs are not a full bridge replacement.
“They’re not treating this as a complete bridge replacement, which would be very disruptive and make it impossible to keep the structure’s original character,” he said.
The borough manager said that a PennDOT cultural resources expert is involved to ensure the bridge’s historical character is preserved during the restoration process.
