More than a year after the tragic death of Susan Barnhart during a flash flood in Upper Makefield Township, the local post office where she worked will be renamed in her memory.

President Joe Biden signed the legislation renaming the post office on River Road on Thursday after legislation was approved by both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate.

The effort to honor Barnhart was spearheaded by Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, according to information posted on his website.

Barnhart, who was a resident of Titusville, New Jersey, is remembered by the community and her colleagues for her dedication and warm presence, according to accounts.

Barnhart had been an employee of the Washington Crossing Post Office for many years before her death on July 15, 2023, when she and her dog, Koda, were caught in sudden floodwaters. Koda survived and was found wandering a local neighborhood two days later.

“Susan’s joy was helping others, always with a warm smile, and she left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was devoted to her work at the Post Office and genuinely cared for her customers and co-workers—it was never just a job to her, and she consistently went above and beyond to help others, said Susan’s sister, Lynda Barnhart. “Still, almost a year later, people are sharing stories with us about how they would visit the Post Office just to experience her smile and service. Susie made everyone she encountered feel special and brightened their days—this dedication perfectly honors her memory and spirit.”

Barnhart was killed along with six others during the flash flooding.
