Holy Family University plans to expand its campus in Newtown Township.

Late last year, State Sen. Steve Santarsiero and State Rep. Perry Warren, both Democrats, presented Dr. Anne Prisco, president of Holy Family University, with a check for $1,524,800 to support the expansion.

The university has acquired the 47,573-square-foot building previously used by La Salle University at 33 University Drive.

Holy Family University, which has its main campus in Philadelphia, has operated a satellite campus nearby at 1 Campus Drive in Newtown Township for many years.

The state grant money will be used by Holy Family University to create a new Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center.

The center will include a hospital-style simulation area for the university’s nursing, biotechnology, business, and AI and cyber-security programs, according to officials.

“This vital funding is bringing together groundbreaking programs in biotechnology, AI and cybersecurity, and entrepreneurship, providing our graduates with marketable skills for careers that are in high demand throughout the region,” Prisco said.

Santarsiero’s office said the funding will be used for building construction, roof work, technology upgrades, and paving.

Holy Family University has previously announced the main Northeast Philadelphia campus is at capacity and the expansion will allow the university to accommodate additional students at both the Northeast Philadelphia and existing Newtown campus locations.

“The expansion of the Holy Family campus in Newtown will provide additional space to offer quality education for its students, as well as an opportunity to expand the biotech incubator footprint across our county,” Santarsiero said. “Cross-collaborative projects like this will continue to grow our region as a biotech destination while exposing students to cutting-edge fields and opportunities.”

“Holy Family University’s Newtown West project is a visionary expansion that will create game-changing opportunities for our students and bring more innovation and growth to the greater Bucks County community,”

The money from the state will be $1,324,800 through the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program and $200,000 through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Local Share Account program.
