A Bucks County man has filed a federal class-action lawsuit against Elon Musk and his political action committee, America PAC, alleging he was not paid for collecting voter petition signatures during the 2024 election season.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court by a Bucks Countian only identified as “John Doe” claims Musk and America PAC reneged on promises to pay individuals who secured signatures from registered swing-state voters supporting the first and second amendments of the U.S. Constitution.

In October and November, Musk publicized the offer. He initially offered $47 per signature and later increased to $100 as he became more involved in conservative politics.

Doe alleges he worked as a canvasser for America PAC and, while receiving an hourly wage and some referral fees, is owed at least $20,000 for unpaid signatures.

The Bucks County man claims to have contacted the PAC repeatedly without resolution.

Doe filed the lawsuit under a pseudonym, citing fears of “retribution (and even potentially threats to his safety)” due to the “political animosity and volatility” surrounding the case. His court filing emphasizes the “political rancor” surrounding the case.

The lawsuit accuses Musk and America PAC of breach of contract and other offenses.

America PAC spokesperson Andrew Romeo responded to the allegations in an email to the Associated Press, stating, “America PAC is committed to paying for every legitimate petition signature, which is evidenced by the fact that we have paid tens of millions of dollars to canvassers for their hard work in support of our mission.”

Romeo added, “While we don’t yet know who this ‘John Doe’ plaintiff is and can’t speak to their specific circumstances, we can say that we are also committed to rooting out fraud and have the right to withhold payments to fraudsters.”

Last year, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, a Democrat, challenged America PAC’s voter sweepstakes as being an illegal lottery, but a city judge shot down the challenge.

According to data from Open Secrets, a campaign finance and lobbying tracking organization, Musk poured more than $291 million into the 2024 election.

Musk, whose companies have received billions in taxpayer dollars, has been a big supporter of President Donald Trump and leads a team slashing government spending and jobs.

The filing of the lawsuit was first reported by the New York Times on Tuesday.
