There’s a reason why We Care Legal Services is constantly receiving praise from their clients, even years after their cases have closed out.
Dr. Jan Grossman, who started the law firm 27 years ago, knows the reason and is proud of the reputation We Care Legal Services has built up across the county. Jan’s wife Mary Ann, a teacher turned attorney, joined the law firm in 2001.
“With the name, we wanted to give everyone the understanding that our firm is based on a genuine caring for people,” Jan said. “We treat our clients with respect and compassion.”
The very personal, family-like approach to practicing law comes from Jan’s background as a psychologist and Mary Ann’s belief that helping clients as partners in law is the best approach to handle complicated legal situations like divorce, adoptions, child custody, prenuptials and criminal cases.
The law firm has offices in both Levittown and Doylestown. In addition to these convenient locations, We Care Legal Services and their six attorneys have flexible hours to meet the schedules of their client, including evening and weekend hours.
Jan also proudly notes that calls to We Care Legal Services will be answered no matter the time of day.
“If anyone calls 1-855-Law-Family in the day or evening they will be able to get in touch with a lawyer almost immediately,” he said, noting that he spoke to a client late on a Friday night to rectify an emergency that cropped up.
“We wanted to make sure people in crisis have instant access to their attorneys. It’s more than likely that an attorney will answer. You won’t have to wait two days for a return call,” he said.
While providing top-notch legal services to clients, We Care Legal Services works with a sliding fee scale. Jan said he and Mary Ann realize that not everyone in Bucks County can afford today’s high legal hourly rates. Jan and Mary Ann are able to evaluate each client’s ability to pay during a free consultation.
“We look at the client and what they need. Right now, we have many clients on a payment plan. We are able to do that because we trust them and they follow through because of the good relationship we have with them,” he said.
With We Care Legal Services family atmosphere, clients have the option to have trained therapy dogs, which Jan and Mary Ann rescued, present at consultations and meetings. The most popular dogs – Sammy, Scruffy and Sugar – all have different attributes that can help clients feel at ease during stressful discussion about legal problems.
“The dogs sit beside the client and give comfort if a client request companionship,” Jan said.
The compassion at the firm is aided by Jan’s work as a psychologist, which he practiced before getting his legal degree in the late 1980s, and Mary Ann’s work as a teacher for special needs students. Sometimes injecting humor, talking about issues or gaining perspective can help clients resolve their cases, many times through mediation and not litigation.
Attorneys and staff at We Care Legal Services have received special training dealing with clients who have experienced domestic violence.
Jan said the staff understands the needs and the legal process their clients are going through.
“We have clients tell us that they feel empowered to come here because they feel understood,” Jan said.
Based on experiences in the Levittown office of We Care Legal Services, it is extremely clear that dogs can help ease clients minds. In addition, the caring nature and friendly personalities of the staff and attorneys is evident. Clients walk into to meet with attorneys in a living room atmosphere with comfortable sofas and wearing casual attire.
The Grossmans keep a file of letters from past clients who have been thrilled with the outcome of the cases We Care Legal Services has worked on for them.
“I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for all you have done to keep my baby safe! It has been a whole year since we went to court, and I have you all to thank for that,” one client wrote in a letter to the firm.
“One of the best decisions I made was to have Jan as my attorney. He was responsive, passionate, caring, and willing to fight for others,” another client said.
Jan and Mary Ann said they get satisfaction in helping clients move from a place of crisis when they walk into their offices to seeing them leave to lead normal, happy lives.
“I like to see how well their family is after and their life accomplishments after we work with them, sometimes even years later. That’s what it’s about for us,” Jan said.
