Tony award-winning musical Les Misérables comes to George School this February.

The show will be staged February 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. in Walton Center Auditorium. The show is free and open to the public.

More than forty students are involved in the production of Les Mis, making it one of the largest casts to ever take the stage at George School.

“We are approaching this production with a professional mindset,” said Sydney Johnson ’17. “We are using an accurately sized cast and we aren’t dumbing it down for the high school level.”

“Performing such a well-known show means that we have to both stay true to the tradition of the show and put our creative license on it.”

The actors and actresses are working diligently outside of rehearsal to find inspiration for their characters—listening to the many versions of each song, working with voice teachers, and drinking lots of tea and water to stay healthy.

It isn’t just the musical that is complex, the set is an intricate work of art as well. Under the direction of Scott Hoskins, stagecraft teacher, a student stage crew has been busy working on the set since the beginning of the term.

“This is the most technically complicated set we’ve ever done,” said Faith Boucher ’17. “I don’t want to reveal all the secrets but we do have trap doors and other surprises that will reveal themselves during the course of the show.”

Designed by Scott, the set must accommodate the forty-eight actors and actresses who are performing in the production.

“The talent pool we have for this show is really impressive,” shared Noah Fischer ’17. “If for nothing else, come see it because the acting and singing is going to be phenomenal.”

Les Mis is the world’s longest-running musical and has been performed in more than 300 countries since its debut in 1985.
