The Newtown Memorial Day Parade set for Monday has been cancelled.
The parade was cancelled due to forecasted rain that is expected to fall Memorial Day.
Here’s the forecast:
- Memorial Day: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 4 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 75. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
- Monday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
The parade was to be led by Grand Marshal Stan Matthews, a life-long Newtown resident, graduate of Newtown High School and a World War II Navy veteran. Matthews, a 65 year member of the Morell Smith Post 440, has served on the parade’s rifle squad for 30 years and has reportedly never missed a parade.
