A call Sunday afternoon in Newtown Township is an example of how dangerous police work can be.

Township police said they were called to a home on Penn Oak Trail around 1:45 p.m. for an occupied suspicious vehicle that was blocking the resident’s driveway. Upon arrival, an officer found a man slumped over the front seat with the car running.

The officer was able to wake the man in the car – identified Eugene Black, 64, of Newtown Township – after several attempts, police said.

“The officer formed the opinion that Black was under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance which rendered him incapable of safe driving and he was taken into custody,” according to a police press release.

Black was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown by police.

At the hospital, he refused to give a sample of blood for testing, police allege.

“As officers were transporting Black to headquarters he was agitated and argumentative and the situation escalated upon arrival to the point that he kicked one of the officers,” police said.

Black was taken to Northampton’s police station and he was processed.
Black was arraigned before on-call District Judge William Benz on a single felony charge of aggravated assault. He was sent to Bucks County prison on 10 percent of $10,000 bail and released Thursday after his bail was set to nonmonetary, court records state.

Police said they plan to also charge Black with DUI.
