Newtown’s Market Day – an event featuring crafters, artisans, fine arts, entertainment and food – is set to take place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Court Street and Centre Avenue.
The event, which benefits the the Newtown Historic Association, was first held in 1978, reviving an old tradition in the town, where long ago, local farmers brought their crops to town to sell. It was a day of festivities and contests that culminated with a horse race down State Street.
More than 85 crafters will be on hand for demonstrations at the event, displaying chair caning, quilting, rug hooking, and more. A farmer’s market will also be on site as well as folk music, children’s activities, games, a corn husk contest, horse-drawn hayrides, and even a colonial militia encampment. Local restaurants will be participating in the Festival of Foods and Open Hearth Cooking will also be demonstrated.
To assist with parking for the free event, a complimentary shuttle will be provided by the Pickering Manor Home. The shuttle will provide transport for visitors to get from the New Life Christian Church parking lot to Market Day and back. The New Life Christian Church is located at 4 Freedom Drive in Newtown.
