Bucks County’s newest district attorney was sworn in Tuesday by one of the most widely known former district attorneys.
District Attorney Matt Weintraub, who served as chief of prosecution up until Tuesday, was administered the oath of county Judge Alan Rubenstein, who was the outspoken top law enforcement official in the county in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
With his wife and two daughters by his side, Weintraub was sworn in. The courtroom where the ceremony took place was jam packed with attorneys, law enforcement officials and county leaders. In the front row was recently retired District Attorney David Heckler.
Weintraub has worked for the district attorney’s office for two stints that equal 13 1/2 years. The Upper Southampton native first began at the office as an intern in 1992.
When Heckler announced his retirement last month, he said he felt Weintraub was well suited for the position.
Weintraub, a Republican, confirmed to NewtownPANow.com that he will run for district attorney next year.
Weintraub has become a recognizable face in Bucks County towns as he has met with community members to talk about the heroin epidemic and also spearheaded efforts to increase DUI enforcement. Earlier this year, the incoming-district attorney recalled to reporters the deaths of four high school classmates who died in an Upper Southampton DUI crash in 1985. The deaths have had an impact on his efforts to curb intoxicated driving.
Since Heckler’s retirement, Deputy District Attorney Michelle Henry has overseen the office.
