Republican Sen. Pat Toomey will continue to represent Pennsylvanians in Washington D.C.

The 54-year-old Republican announced victory over Philadelphia-raised Democrat Katie McGinty early Wednesday morning after a close race.

The Senate seat is important to Republicans and nationally watched by both parties. The election is believed to have set a spending record for a Senate race.

Katie McGinty, Democrat running for Senate, worked to excite the crowd at an event Saturday.

Toomey, who was first elected to the Senate in 2010, has been seen by his party as a strong supporter of his peers.

The ugly race between McGinty and the incumbent filled hours of air time with large commercial buys by the campaigns and outside groups.

Toomey was wishy-washy on answering whether he would vote for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. After spending most of election day without announcing his choice, Toomey admitted to voting for Trump Tuesday evening.
