Property taxes in Upper Makefield will go down if the Board of Supervisors approves their currently proposed spending plan in December.
The preliminary 2017 budget cuts property taxes by 1.25 mills to 8.6025 mills. The 1-percent Earned Income Tax (EIT) that is split between the Council Rock School District will remain the same.
The $9.599 million proposed budget includes money to hire two new police officers, $544,000 for the 2017 road improvement program, $277,000 for water system improvements, $185,000 for the Upper Makefield Fire Company, $166,000 for park improvements, $14,000 for the Lingohocken Fire Company and $14,625 to help fund the five-year capital improvement plan, Interim Township Manager David Nyman said during a recent presentation.
By the end of the 2016 budget year, the township is expected to come in about $600,000 under budget, Nyman said. The interim township manager said the revenues were higher than expected and budgeted costs were lower than planned.
“The entire township team of employees should be commended for their efforts. With this year’s ongoing work to continue to control costs and contain spending, township staff has exhibited their dedication to serving the residents of Upper Makefield,” Nyman wrote in a budget report.
Nyman came into the township’s budgeting process as it was already underway following former Township Manager Jim Pascale’s sudden resignation in September.
The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the budget at their December 20 meeting.
