The search for a new councilperson in Newtown Borough is underway.
On Tuesday evening, State Representative-Elected Perry Warren, a Democratic councilperson, announced he will resign from his borough seat on December 31.
Council President Bob Walker said last week that the borough would begin looking for a resident to fill Warren’s seat. The council has one month from a council person’s resignation date to find a replacement, according to the state Borough Code.
During the meeting, Newtown Mayor Charles “Corky” Swartz presented Warren with a plaque with a Bucks County-made Mercer Tile thanking the incoming state representative for his service.
“On behalf of the borough council and the citizens of the community I wish you well out in Harrisburg,” Swartz said. “And thank you for serving the borough.”
“It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve the residents of Newtown Borough over the past seven years,” Perry replied. “I thank them for their support, as well as the support of my present and past colleagues on council and the mayors we have worked with.”
Three days into the new year, Warren will be sworn in to serve the the 31st Legislative District, which includes all of Newtown Borough, Newtown Township, Lower Makefield and Yardley and a portion of Morrisville.
Walker said one borough resident has so far expressed interest in the soon-to-be vacant Council seat.
If you are registered to vote and live in the borough continuously for at least one year, you can submit your resume to Newtown secretary Judy Musto, 23 North State Street or email jmusto.newtown@gmail.com.
