County To Increase Cybersecurity

Bucks County is working to increase its cybersecurity systems and internet connectivity.

The Bucks County Commissioners approved a $1.2 million contract extension with Herndon, Virginia-based Level 3 Communications earlier this week. Their vote extends an already existing contract that was to end in 2019. The contract now has a 2022 closing date.

County Chief Information Officer Don Jacobs said the contract will help improve improved internet connectivity, speed and security.

One of the main goals on the contract extension with Level 3 Communications would be to increase cyber security by adding hardware in Bucks County and an off-site network operations center. The upgraded systems will be continually monitored for security threats, a task that wouldn’t be possible if the county were working independently, Jacobs said.

“[Cybersecurity] is the number 1 objective in IT globally right now,” Jacobs said.
