A 110-foot cell phone tower will be going up one the campus of Bucks County Community College.
The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors voted last week to approve the construction of the tower that will be used by Verizon.
Nicholas Cuce Jr., an attorney for Verizon, explained the tower will be a monopole-type structure that will fill a service gap for Verizon subscribers
Verizon officials said they look for nearby structures where they could put cell service antennas but did not find any in the area of the community college, which has a high usage rate.
The tower will have a concrete pad, small control structure, beige security fence, diesel generator and 105-foot tower with a 5-foot-tall lightning rod on top, officials said.
Construction will take place near a wooded area not far from the community college’s border with Tyler State Park.
The Board of Supervisors elected to choose the less obtrusive tree-like appearance for the tower, which will only rise a few feet above the tree line.
If the new cell tower is added, it will help increase service speeds and reduce the burden on nearby towers, Verizon officials said.
As part of the agreement, the community college will receive lease fees for use of their land where the Verizon tower will be constructed.
