Former State Rep. Steve Santarsiero plans to announce that he will run for retiring State Sen. Chuck McIlhinney’s 10th Senate District seat.

The Democrat from Lower Makefield wrote in a note email to party members in Doylestown that he plans to make his announcement Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Temperance House in Newtown Borough.

“As some of you have heard by now, Chuck McIlhinney has announced that he is not running for re-election this year. As a consequence, this is now and open seat and the Democratic party’s No. 1 target in the PA State Senate,” Santarsiero wrote.

“We are living in a time when we all need to step up to make a difference,” he added.

The seat that Santarsiero is running for has been held by Republican McIlhinney since he won the election in 2006. Santarsiero served as a state representative until his failed bid for congress in 2016. He has served as an attorney handling environmental protection matters for Attorney General Josh Shapiro since last year.

The 10th Senate District covers Tullytown, Falls Township, Morrisville, Newtown Township, Newtown Borough, Lower Makefield, Upper Makefield, Doylestown Borough, Doylestown Township and a number of other towns in the central and upper portions of Bucks County.
