Sites of statewide or national historical significance in Lower Bucks County can receive a historical marker – but first, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission needs to know about them.

Individuals, public agencies, and private organizations are being invited to submit suggestions for new historical markers by December 1.

Since 1914, the markers have “chronicled the people, places and events that have affected the lives of Pennsylvanians over the centuries,” officials said.

In Bucks County, there are dozens of the historical markers, including ones in the Newtown area. Across the state, there are more than 2,500 historical markers that celebrate Native Americans and settlers, government and politics, athletes, entertainers, artists, struggles for freedom and equality, and factories and businesses.

If a historical maker application is approved, the applicant is responsible for the cost of the historical makers, which can range from $2,060 and $1,620.

Nomination forms can be obtained online and must be send to the State Historical Marker Program, Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office, PHMC, 400 North St., Second Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17120.
