Public Cautioned About Using Outdoor Mailboxes After Newtown Twp. Postal Theft

The Newtown Township Police Department is warning residents of mail theft from outdoor boxes at the USPS office on Terry Drive.

Following a theft at the U.S. Postal Service office on Terry Drive, the Newtown Township Police Department is cautioning residents about the safety of outdoor mailboxes and potential check fraud.

Police confirmed that two blue mailboxes situated in the post office’s parking area were forcibly opened during the overnight Monday into Tuesday, leading to the theft of an unspecified quantity of mail.

“We suggest that if you utilized these boxes after business hours on September 25, 2023, you monitor your accounts closely and cancel any personal checks that have been mailed,” police said.

In other recent incidents, the department has encountered instances where personal checks, swiped from these very mailboxes, were later tampered with and cashed for much higher values, police said.

“With the intent to safeguard your personal and financial information, especially outside of normal business hours, we suggest bringing any mail containing personal checks inside the post office,” police said.
