Newtown Borough police handled 120 calls for service in January.

Among the incidents were five crashes in the borough, including one that involved a car colliding with a SEPTA bus. No injuries were reported, but the crash caused a traffic backup, Chief of Police James Sabath said.

An intoxicated man was arrested after he attacked a family member who had come to pick him up, allegedly strangling her and stealing her car. The car was later recovered, Sabath said.

A 21-year-old Yardley man was arrested for chasing down his ex-girlfriend along State Street after she broke up with him. He was charged, Sabath said.

Several scams were reported, including a resident sending money to a person falsely claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy calling for a bogus jury duty payment and a person who was scammed after being told there was a virus on their computer, Sabath said.

The chief said there was a check stolen from a mailbox.
