Newtown Borough Council has appointed a new member to serve on the governing body.

Gina Tognini was sworn in by Senior U.S. District Judge Cynthia Rufe Tuesday evening after being selected by council.

Tognini’s husband has a law practice in the area, and she volunteers with community groups and church. Her husband previously ran for council, and she was looking to give back to the community, she said last week during a public interview.

Tognini will serve Ward 2 through December 2025 when the term expires.

Council Member Maryellen Raymond resigned recently from her Ward 2 seat. She served since January 2022.

Council President Emily Heinz commended those who were interested in the position.

At last week’s work session, council interviewed Tognini, Timothy Jones, and Kim Korda for the position.
