Low-income residents of Bucks County can access free income tax preparation services thanks to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offered by the Bucks County Opportunity Council.
The VITA program uses IRS-certified volunteers to help individuals and families with a combined income of $64,000 or less.
Services are available through April 15 at five locations across the county, including two in Bristol and locations in Warminster, Quakertown, and Newtown.
Bucks County Opportunity Council volunteers, who dedicate their evenings and weekends to the program, undergo training on federal, state, and local tax laws. They focus particularly on tax credits beneficial to low- and moderate-income families, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. All volunteers must pass an IRS-certification exam annually.
Over the past 20 years, the nonprofit’s tax volunteers have prepared more than 18,000 returns for Bucks County families.
According to the Bucks County Opportunity Council, the VITA program has generated over $34 million in refunds, tax credits, and savings on preparation fees.
The VITA program is supported by the IRS and locally sponsored by the Bucks County Foundation and First National Bank and Trust Co. of Newtown. Additional volunteer support is provided for scheduling and administrative tasks.
Appointments are mandatory and can be scheduled.
