With the federal enforcement deadline looming, PennDOT is reminding residents to get a REAL ID before May 7.
PennDOT and TSA officials said Tuesday at Philadelphia International Airport that while REAL ID is optional, it will be required for domestic air travel and entry to certain federal facilities after the deadline. A valid U.S. passport remains an acceptable alternative for these purposes and is required for international travel.
“If you don’t have a REAL ID, now is the time,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “It’s really not as complicated as you think.”
More than 2.5 million Pennsylvanians have already opted into the REAL ID program, which was put into place as part of a federal law passed in 2005.
To obtain a REAL ID, residents must provide documentation verifying their identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of Pennsylvania residency. Those who have legally changed their names must also provide supporting documents.
PennDOT offers an online wizard to help residents determine if a REAL ID is right for them.
The initial REAL ID costs $30, plus standard renewal fees.
Residents who obtained their first Pennsylvania driver’s license, learner’s permit, or photo ID after Sept. 1, 2003, may be able to apply for pre-verification online.
PennDOT offers multiple ways to obtain a REAL ID, including applying at driver license centers or dedicated REAL ID centers.
At the Bensalem Township PennDOT Driver’s License Center, residents can apply and receive their REAL ID by mail within 15 days.
PennDOT is also holding special REAL ID days at select locations, which no locations in Bucks County taking part, to help residents obtain their cards before the deadline.
Starting May 7, Pennsylvanians will need a REAL ID-compliant license/identification card, or another form of federally acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to:
- Board domestic commercial flights.
- Enter a military base.
- Enter certain federal facilities that require a federally acceptable form of ID.
More information about REAL ID requirements and locations can be found on PennDOT’s website.
