A large brush fire that forced evacuations in Upper Makefield Township on Thursday was sparked during mowing in overgrown fields.

Fire Marshal John Kernan told NewtownPANow.com that the blaze originated when debris and grass clippings blew into the engine compartment of a mowing machine. The debris began to burn and then ignited the dry field after it blew out, Kernan said.

Kernan added that the windy conditions and dry weather contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

The fire, which broke out in the area of Washington Crossing between Lord Sterling and Lafayette Drive, prompted the evacuation of nearby homes and businesses, including the Washington Crossing Cooperative Nursery School.

All evacuees were safely accounted for, and no injuries or structural damage were reported.

In addition to the Upper Makefield Fire Company, a number of surrounding fire companies responded to assist.
