Crooks posing as Bucks County Sheriff Office’s deputies are running a scam and trying to squeeze cash and personal info out of unsuspecting residents.
On Wednesday, the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office said they’re swamped with reports of scammers using bullying tactics and threats to scare residents into forking over their hard-earned cash.
The con artists are even using the names of real deputies and spoofing the sheriff’s office’s phone number to look legit.
“Let me be clear: no member of the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office will ever call you demanding money or threatening arrest over the phone,” Sheriff Fred Harran said. “These criminals are preying on our community, and it’s crucial that residents remain vigilant. If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and contact your local police department.”
The sheriff’s office said the scammers often demand payment through methods like Bitcoin, gift cards, or even payments at retail kiosks. Real law enforcement doesn’t operate that way, officials stressed.
“The Bucks County Sheriff’s Office wants to clearly state that its personnel will never call or email residents demanding money for any reason. The office does not issue federal or jury warrants via phone or email and will never ask for financial payments through these means,” the office said in a statement.
Here’s the lowdown on how to protect yourself:
• Don’t fall for the threats: The Bucks County Sheriff’s Office will never strong-arm you over the phone. If you feel pressured, hang up.
• Warrants are not for sale: You can’t bribe your way out of a warrant. Don’t give out any personal or financial details.
• Double-check: If you’re suspicious, call the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office directly to verify the call.
“We’re all in this together to protect our citizens,” Harran said.
If you think you’ve been scammed or contacted by the crooks, the sheriff asks residents to call their local police department.
