New Jersey Transit and its train engineers reached a tentative agreement Sunday to end a three-day strike.

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union announced Sunday night that its members would return to work on Tuesday, with regular train schedules expected to resume that day.

The strike started Friday morning and left 350,000 people impacted by the service disruption.

NJ Transit confirmed that train service would resume on Tuesday.

“It takes approximately 24 hours to inspect and prepare tracks, rail cars and other infrastructure before returning to full scheduled service,” the transit agency said in a statement.

Supplemental bus service will continue to run on Monday. The nearby Hamilton Rail Station Park and Ride is offering bus service to the Newark Penn Station PATH station.

The strike was the first in New Jersey in more than 40 years.

According to various reports, NJ Transit’s negotiations with the union were hung up on finding a way to implement a wage increase for the engineers, while not harming the system’s finances.

While the tentative agreement signals an end to the strike, NJ Transit is urging commuters to continue working from home on Monday due to the time needed to prepare the system for full operation.

SEPTA rail service is not impacted by the NJ Transit strike.

It remains unclear how many residents of Bucks County rely on NJ Transit daily, and the agency operates a large rail yard in Falls Township.
