Washington Crossing Historic Park is preparing to host its 73rd annual reenactment of General George Washington’s daring Delaware River crossing.

The local reenactment commemorates a defining moment of the American Revolution—the night of December 25, 1776, which launched the crucial “Ten Crucial Days” campaign.

The Friends of Washington Crossing Park are offering the community two opportunities to experience history this season: the First Crossing on Sunday, Dec. 14, and the traditional Christmas Day Crossing on Thursday, Dec. 25.

The First Crossing on Sunday, Dec. 14, is a ticketed, all-day event packed with activities for the entire family.

Gates open at 10 a.m., leading up to the scheduled crossing of the Delaware in replica Durham boats at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 11. A family rate is available for $25.

Proceeds support the park’s educational programs and ensure that the main Christmas Day event remains free for the public.

The event will feature Washington, who is portrayed by John Godzieba, live cannon fire, a demonstration by blacksmiths, and the Washington Crossing Fife and Drum Corps. Children can even participate in military drills with toy muskets.

This year, Tom Hand, the founder of Americana Corner, will serve as the guest narrator. Hand is scheduled for a book signing and presentation between 10 a.m. and noon.

Tickets for the First Crossing can be purchased in advance at WashingtonCrossingPark.org/cross-with-us.

The traditional Christmas Day Crossing on Thursday, Dec. 25, is the main commemorative event and offers free admission to all visitors.

The Christmas event is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m., with the actual river crossing set for 1 p.m.

Organizers are asking visitors to arrive by 11:30 a.m. to secure the best view of the riverbank ceremony, which will feature military processions and an inspiring speech from Washington.

The event remains free thanks to the funds raised during the First Crossing and contributions from generous donors.

Both crossings feature hundreds of reenactors in full Continental Army uniform.

Free parking will be clearly marked for both dates.

Park officials emphasize that all river crossings are contingent upon safe conditions on the Delaware. If conditions are deemed unsafe, living history demonstrations, ceremonies, and speeches will still take place.
