UPDATED: 9:42 p.m., Tuesday:
“We believe the ignition was associated with a generic battery charging device that is designed to charge a variety of electronic devices. All other items in this student’s backpack were unrelated to the source and cause of the fire,” Superintendent Dr. Robert Fraser said.
Original Story:
A smokey fire caused the evacuation of Council Rock High School South Tuesday afternoon.
The Northampton high school was evacuated around 1:50 p.m. due to “smoke issues” caused by a “charging device that ignited in a book bag” in a second-floor classroom, according to a note to parents.
“Although the issue was quickly contained with a small extinguisher, there were residual effects which impacted nearby classrooms and the corridor,” Principal Albert R. Funk wrote in a letter.
Firefighters arrived quickly to the school and deemed the fire extinguished, Funk said in his letter.
Council Rock South students returned to their classes by 2:10 p.m. and were dismissed shortly after.
It was not immediately clear what the device that ignited was designed to charge up.
