Adaptive Traffic Signals On Bypass Experience Issues, Project Is Halted

td_traficam

As warned by the Newtown Township Police Department on Tuesday, issues have indeed struck the newly installed adaptive traffic signals on the Newtown Bypass.

Newtown Township Manager Kurt Ferguson noted Wednesday evening that the technology has been halted for at least the next two weeks.

According to Ferguson, the company responsible  for installing the lights, noted that there were significant problems with “the lights communicating with one another”.

The issues with the technology are expected to be worked out over the next few weeks and the technology will be back up and running once all the problems have been sorted out.

The system which is part of a PennDOT project, is trained to adapt itself based on real-time demand of the lights along the road. PennDOT reported that traffic delays drop about 13% with use of adaptive signal technology. Newtown Township noted that PennDOT is responsible for both the maintenance and operation of the system.
