If you haven’t heard already, Tax Day 2016 is this Monday, April 18, not the traditional April 15.
Why?
According to the IRS, the deadline for federal taxes has been pushed back from April 15 to April 18 due to Emancipation Day, which is on April 16 but being observed in the nation’s capital on Friday. The IRS is based in Washington D.C. and many of its employees will have off on April 15.
Due to the celebration of Emancipation Day, federal and state taxes must be filed by April 18, the next business day.
Emancipation Day celebrates Abraham Lincoln signing the Compensated Emancipation Act on April 16, 1862.
In 2005, Emancipation Day was made an official holiday in Washington D.C. but has been celebrated since 1866.
