Steeple View developer Alan Smith told Newtown Borough Council he is close to signing two more retailers to fill the mixed-use development he is building on South State Street.

While he wouldn’t divulge the names of the two new tenants, he said both are “quality names” and will fit into Newtown nicely.

Retailers Banana Republic and women’s fashion and accessories store Francesca’s have already signed on to the development that is transforming the nine-acre former Stockburger property.

Smith also updated the council on progress of the construction of the first phase of the project that will house retail stores and 10 custom condominiums that overlook Newtown.

The steel skeleton of the project is currently being erected along South State Street, Smith said. In addition, he reported to the council that work will be speeding up and the building will begin taking shape through late spring and summer.

“I think you’re going to see a lot of changes over the next two or three weeks”, Smith said.

Five of the condominiums are sold and a sixth is currently being considered by a potential buyer.

Preliminary plans for the second phase of the Steeple View project has been submitted to the borough for review. Smith said the plans are 88 pages and are being reviewed by the borough engineer.

Phase two of the project includes more mixed-use buildings, a 500-car parking garage and public spaces, including a piazza. The second phase includes the demolition of 10 Centre Avenue, the building that houses the Fine Wine and Good Spirits store and Newtown Beer.

“I’ve been spending a lot of time working on that piazza- not from a engineering perspective but from an aesthetic perspective,” Smith said.

The proposed plans for phase two will be brought before the council this summer.
